The Sound Exchange website of the Philharmonia Orchestra came into being earlier this year. In development since 2000 and based on an idea by Olivia Lawson, The Sound Exchange is an educational project of the orchestra providing access to a large collection of instrument samples and musical phrases available to download for free.
The sound library has all of the orchestras instruments and you can choose by instrument and key note for the sample that you want. There are options to preview before you download and they even have selections for phrases and grooves.
There is also a free standalone sequencing program that you can download to play them all through as well as an on line version. Both work equally well depending upon your needs.
The site of course serves an educational and promotional purpose with lots of information about the orchestra, music to hear, podcasts, discussions and a listing of events. The design and navigation throughout the site was well thought out and graphicly quite appealing. A smart idea and well worth the time taking a tour throughout the site.
