Fretted Synth Audio has a free vst effect plugin called Free Amp 3 which is an amplifier and speaker simulator with effects. Great for use with live instrument line feeds especially guitar and bass but will work well with other audio sources as well. You can download just the amp or the full unit with the stomp and rack effects.
You have a choice of drive types, EQ settings, speaker cabinets and microphone placement. You can switch the display panel between the stomp boxes and the rack effects. Tempo can be controlled manualy, sync to the host or you can tap it in.
It comes with some very useful presets to get you started and you can save your own configurations.
It has all the usual effects:
Theres more features, but just give it a try yourself and check out its capabilities. Quite impressive.
Get Fretted Synth at Rekkord.org. It may not be Guitar Rig but its still a pretty nice plugin effect for free and has a really nice sound.
how do i actually use this. i think i am right in saying that this isnt software on its own but dont understand what to do with it.. also can i connect my guitar to the pc using a 6.35mm to 3.5mm or do i need some sort of 6.35mm to usb
going to give this one a go, went to a load of trouble to get x-gear amplitude for nothing, damned if i can work out why theres distortion in the program without even connecting it to my mixer? hope this one works!

@Mutt_davvg Thanks for the new link, I just used my hosts (Ableton) built in vst save/load for individual and bank presets. Most have it, how it works depends on yours.
