M-Audio Controllers

I have an Axiom 49 and want to know if anyone has been able to get theres working over usb plug n play. I can only get the other controls, faders and such working by installing the M-audio driver. But they say on there site you shouldnt need a driver.

Anyone got this working or know anything about this. I couldnt get it to recognize the device until I installed the drivers either. It would see the device plugged in but in the device manager it just said (unknown device).
